Splendid fortified wine flavoured with green walnuts from the Rhône valley.
Producer: Distilleries et Domaines de Provence, Forcalquier, France
Nut wines are traditional drinks in Haute-Provence and were often prepared at home by many families. For the Noix de la Saint-Jean, the walnuts are harvested on or before St Jean’s Day (celebrating John the Baptist) on June 24th to ensure they are still green and the shells haven't begun to harden. The walnuts are then macerated in the wine and the recipe is completed with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.
What we say: "Perfect on an autumn or winter evening, this a heavenly drink for port lovers. On the nose, the dominant note is walnut with hints of dried fruit. On the palate it’s comforting, a tad bitter, with aromas of nuts as well as cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. The tannins are very fine. The Noix de la Saint Jean is drunk neat and is great at "l’apéritif" or at the end of meal instead of sweet wine. It’s also incredibly delicious with strong cheeses."
